How to apply?

Applications for PhD-Grants and Fellowships for Post-Doctoral Research

Applications for both grants should include

  • a research proposal (maximum of 4 pages prefaced by an abstract of 100 words) presenting the research problem and research methodology (including the sources to be examined), reviewing the relevant literature, and indicating the relevance of the research to one or both of the Sephis themes
  • an academic curriculum vitae (maximum of 3 pages)
  • a letter testifying to institutional affiliation
  • a budget
  • a timetable
  • two referee's reports (download the form for the referee report here. The report should be signed. The referee can send the report directly to the Sephis office or it can be included in the application in a sealed envelope.)

Applications for PhD grants should also include

  • a letter of recommendation by the thesis supervisor

Applications for Post-doctoral fellowships should also include 

  • an indication of the form of publication (book, article etc.)
  • a copy of the PhD certificate, or, and only in the case of non-availability of PhD certificate
  • 3 articles published in international refereed magazines

Research proposals will be selected by the Sephis Steering Committee. The applications will be evaluated according to academic quality, relevance to Sephis themes, comparative potential, and contribution to South-South co-operation. Applications should be written in English. Incomplete applications, applications by fax or e-mail and/or too lengthy applications cannot be taken into consideration.

The application and all requests about the fellowships and grants programme should be sent to the Sephis Secretariat in Amsterdam before April 15th.
